Student Outreach Program

In the 21st century, media literacy is vital to K-12 student success within academic and future work settings. Students need to use higher thinking skills to understand, analyze and interpret the vast amounts of media available today. Current research says that in order to thrive and survive in the workforce students will also need to develop the creative side of their brain. With this research in mind, schools across the country have been brainstorming ways to foster creativity in the classroom setting. Student film projects are a perfect way to foster creativity and allow for cross-curricular learning opportunities.

Student created media, through its involvement in the world of computers, video, sound, and photography, is a proven avenue to increasing student participation in the classroom learning environment. Reading comprehension, critical thinking skills, teamwork and leadership are all used when students venture into the world of film making.

The LBI Film Festival plans to lead the charge in the K-12 academic film making setting through:
  • Providing a platform for youth films at the festival;

  • Having people from all aspects of the film world available for school visits;

  • Involving the public library system to spread the word and joining in their current teen movie making efforts; and

  • Involving state school library associations so that School Library Media Specialists/Librarians can encourage project based multimedia projects within the school classroom setting.
