2009 Press Release
Lighthouse International Film Festival Adds Cannes Film to Line-Up
Los Bastardos to make its East Coast debut on Long Beach Island's inaugural film festival on June 4th to June 7th
Long Beach Island, NJ
May 27, 2009
The Lighthouse International Film Festival is excited to announce the addition of Los Bastardos to its line-up. The film is a story of two Mexican day laborers take a troubled housewife hostage in her own home. Co-produced by Carlos Reygadas, Amat Escalante's Los Bastardos explores the depths of human brutality with the same cool cinematic certitude as the work of Michael Haneke and Bruno Dumont. Los Bastardos premiered at the 2008 Cannes film festival.
"We are so proud to host the East Coast premiere of Los Bastardos, a terrific film to add to our amazing line-up," said organizer Charlie Prince, a prominent entertainment attorney and long-time Long Beach Island resident. "With the festival less than a week away, we couldn't be more pleased with the outstanding quality of films that are on the schedule for our inaugural event. All film fanatics deserve an event of this calibre, especially in one of the most beautiful settings on the East Coast. I can't wait for next weekend, when will all be able to share and celebrate these incredible films!"
In addition to Los Bastardos, the festival will include three films that have played at Sundance (Big Fan, The Missing Person and The End of the Line), two films that played at SXSW (Pulling John and Made in China) and two films that played at Tribeca (MTV's Wild Wonderful Whites of West Virginia and Marina of the Zabbaleen).
The festival will also include other great activities, such as free family-friendly surfing movies and a program for kids. There will also be a "Breakfast with the Filmmakers" on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, a talk with the real "Gidget," cocktail parties on Friday and Saturday nights (one will include a fun arm wrestling event with some of the stars from Pulling John), live bands and appearances by Giants' legend Howard Cross and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Long Beach Island - A Historic Setting of Sun, Sand - and Surf!
Aside from films, LBI will be showing off something else: itself. New visitors to LBI will discover the restaurants, hotels and businesses that residents and vacationers already know and love. One of the Island's more notable attributes is that it is among America's premier surfing destinations. To acknowledge and honor the Island's proud history, the Festival will be showing a special series of surfing films. Further information on the Festival's surfing films is available at: http://www.lighthousefilmfestival.org/guide/
Festival for Kids
In partnership with KIDS FIRST!, the Festival will also be holding special screenings and events by and for young people. The Festival wants to foster and encourage emerging talent, and a program is being developed to showcase the talents of young people. Artistic development and media literacy are important factors in a child's development, and the Festival hopes to increase both with a program that will make filmmakers available for school visits; increase awareness of media literacy and filmmaking through area libraries.
Beyond New York: New Jersey and the Film Industry
New Jersey has a special relationship with filmmaking: the movie camera was invented here. Over a century later, through the Lighthouse International Film Festival, visitors to LBI will be exposed to some of the most interesting work being shot today. And through the Festival's outreach program to students, the next generation of area residents will have the opportunity to develop their creativity in new ways. We are certain that it will be a wonderful addition to summer in Southern Ocean County. Further details and exciting guests for the festival are to be announced.
