2010 Press Release
LIFF Announces Highlight Films
Long Beach Island, New Jersey
May 26, 2010
The Lighthouse International Film Festival is highlighting several of its more than fifty films for special mention in the press in the days leading up to the June 4th opening of the Festival which will run during the evening of June 4, and all day Saturday and Sunday, June 5 and 6 at four venues on Long Beach Island.
A Feature Narrative Film Broken Dreams directed by David Crabtree is about Johnny, a struggling filmmaker, for whom there just isn't enough time in the day. He can't seem to finish the documentary he has been working on for years; and he can't seem to declare his love for Julie, his best friend. Things become dark as Johnny, afraid he is on the verge of losing Julie, turns to the blues-a new pill that he hopes will give him a few more hours in the day so he can finish his film. But the pill and what comes with it only succeed in putting Johnny and his friends in real danger instead. This film will be screened on Saturday at 4:30 pm at the Beach Haven School.
Meskada will screen Sunday at 3 pm at the Beach Haven School. It is considered the Closing Film, written and directed by Josh Sternfeld. "Meskada will always be special to me, for I know it was this screenplay that made me a writer. Although I made films before this one and will continue to make them after it's completed, the story of Meskada is also the story of my growth as an artist."
Meskada follows Detective Noah Cordin as he struggles to solve the brutal murder of a young boy in the affluent, peaceful town of Hilliard. The tiny scrap of evidence he has leads him back to his nearly destitute hometown of Caswell where he enlists the help of his friends, a local cop and bar owner. Tensions rise between the two towns as their search fails to turn up a suspect. There is a threat to derail a new manufacturing plant from setting up in Caswell because of the case. Hundreds of sorely needed jobs would be lost. This energizes all of Caswell to take part in the murder investigation. While they work to find the killers and keep their town from financial collapse, Noah Cordin's ties to his past and present are stretched to the breaking point, until the young boy's murder reaches its shocking conclusion.
A gripping crime drama in the tradition of No Country for Old Men and Mystic River, Meskada is also a poignant meditation on solidarity and salvation in modern day America.
